Propelling Downtown Forward was developed in coordination with 64.6 Downtown in order to bring together ideas for real estate development, arts and culture, job creation, placemaking, and both public and private investment decisions for the Downtown Fort Smith district. A unified planning effort, the Propelling Downtown Forward document is a master plan and implementation mechanism that facilitates the Future Fort Smith Comprehensive Plan's goal of revitalizing Downtown into a multi-purpose activity center. Serving as a supplement to the FFS plan, it provides a comprehensive development framework for Downtown.

The Propelling Downtown Forward master plan was adopted in 2017, and its implementation tools and governance guidance are delineated in the Propelling Downtown Forward Plan linked below. 

This master plan document provides the quality of place, community vision, infrastructure, regulatory and governance guidance for the sustained investment and redevelopment of Downtown. Specifically, the master plan identifies the established character zones that exist in the Downtown District, each with its own unique offerings for residents and businesses. Those character zones build on Fort Smith’s authentic history, facilitate today’s commerce, and prepare for tomorrow’s potential.

This master plan serves as the business plan for Downtown’s future.
