Community Development Projects
The Community Development Department issued grant funds to assist with the initial construction of the Riverview Hope Campus, which provides overnight shelter, meals, as well as other supportive services to the Fort Smith community. The Next Step Day Room received Community Development Block Grant CARES Act funding for two transitional homes which will allow families experiencing homelessness to stay within their facility. Construction is expected to be completed in early 2023.

Consent Decree Projects
The Consent Decree is an agreement between the City of Fort Smith, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Department of Justice (DOJ) to reduce sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs). The Consent Decree requires the City to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the sanitary sewer system and to develop projects that will address sewer capacity deficiencies. Drainage Improvements

Parks Projects
Recreational spaces such as parks, playgrounds, and sports facilities are undergoing changes to ensure citizens’ safety and enjoyment. A special effort is being made to increase the accessibility of parks and playgrounds for residents and visitors of varying physical abilities. Read about completed and ongoing projects below.
Sidewalk Improvements
In 2023, the Streets and Traffic Control Department is proposing 2.72 miles of new sidewalk construction and 0.95 miles of sidewalk repairs. Visit the Sidewalk Improvements page to discover new construction and repair locations and a timeline for the order of construction.
Streets Projects
Over 500 miles of city streets are maintained by the City of Fort Smith. These streets are evaluated or rated every couple of years for resurfacing. This evaluation considers numerous factors such as longitudinal/surface cracking, weathering, alligator cracking, settlement, rutting, shoving, potholes, and overall ride. Traffic Signal Projects
The Traffic Control Operations program is responsible for maintaining the traffic signals at all 155 signalized intersections within the City and for maintaining all the signage located on City streets.
