Traffic signal projects across the City help ensure resident and visitor safety. Upgrades such as adding signage, replacing poles, and installing radios allow both pedestrians and drivers to better see, hear, and understand traffic movement.

Traffic Management Center

Traffic Control is continuously researching and installing the latest technology in traffic signal control and communications. The City is currently constructing a Traffic Management Center (TMC) to help monitor traffic patterns and analyze data that affect overall traffic flow. This TMC will allow access to real-time traffic data and adjust traffic signal timing more efficiently. This will result in fewer traffic delays throughout the City. Traffic Control also raises awareness of the City’s pedestrian traffic with additional signage, crosswalks, and Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs).

Ongoing and upcoming Traffic Control improvements will help Fort Smith move closer to Vision Zero; the goal to achieve zero roadway fatalities and serious injuries by the year 2050.
