The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded the City of Fort Smith $14.5 million as part of a groundbreaking Climate Pollution Reduction Grant (CPRG) totaling $100,000,000 to the Tri-Region Arkansas CPRG Coalition. This prestigious grant, awarded under the "Energy and Environment Innovation for the Natural State" proposal, will drive a wide array of transformative projects throughout Central Arkansas, Northwest Arkansas, and the Arkansas River Valley.

The Energy and Environment Innovation (EEI) Priority Action Plan (PAP) Supplement for the City of Fort Smith was collaboratively crafted by City Administration, with instrumental support from the Western Arkansas Planning & Development District (WAPDD). Valuable input from the Fort Smith Climate Lobby and The River Valley Green Energy and Education Program (RV-GEEP) further enriched the planning process.

In September 2023, the City of Fort Smith formalized a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Arkansas Department of Energy and Environment, Division of Environmental Quality (DEQ), for regional Climate Pollution Reduction Grant (CPRG) planning. The designated Fort Smith Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) encompasses five counties, including three in Arkansas and two in Oklahoma, with Fort Smith anchoring this vital region. Boasting a population exceeding 300,000 citizens, this area includes key cities like Van Buren, Ozark, Poteau, and Sallisaw, all strategically positioned under the umbrella of Fort Smith in the western part of Arkansas.

Key Projects

Alleyway Rehabilitation: The transformation of 11,510 linear feet of alleyways into multi-use paths will enhance community connectivity, combat blight, and provide safe, sustainable transportation options. This project will connect critical amenities and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging walking and cycling.
E-Bike Rebate Program: This innovative program will offer point-of-sale vouchers for e-bike purchases, prioritizing income-qualified residents. The initiative aims to increase access to eco-friendly transportation and reduce reliance on short vehicle trips.
EV Charging Infrastructure: The grant will fund the installation of 13 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at seven locations across the city, supporting the transition to clean transportation and reducing emissions from the transportation sector.
Public Housing Solar Project: An 850 kW solar array will be installed to power 288 units at Nelson Hall Homes and the Fort Smith Housing Authority Administrative Offices. This project will significantly reduce electrical expenses and lower carbon emissions for low-income residents.
Workforce Development: Training workshops, internships, and apprenticeships will be organized to build a skilled workforce in conservation, solar energy, and energy efficiency. The initiative will involve collaboration with local institutions and non-profits to provide hands-on training and career advancement opportunities.
