Located along the western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma border, the Frontier Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) serves as a liaison between local governments and state and federal agencies in matters involving major regional needed transportation improvements. The MPO is funded by the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) through the Arkansas (AHTD) and Oklahoma (ODOT) Departments of Transportation. The Frontier MPO study area is defined as the area projected to become urbanized within the next 20 years in western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma.
In addition to providing transportation planning assistance to its member governments and entities, the MPO, in cooperation with its members, prepares: the unified planning work program (UPWP) that identifies the types of assistance and work activities for the upcoming fiscal year; a four-year Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) that contains all federally funded transportation projects for the MPO area; and, a twenty-five year, Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) for the entire MPO area that defines a coordinated, and comprehensive approach to improve and manage the region’s intermodal transportation network. This plan is updated every five years.
