Lead and Copper Rule

WHAT IS THE LEAD AND COPPER RULE?

In 1991, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established the Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) to control the presence of lead and copper in drinking water. There have been recent revisions to the rule, establishing new requirements for protecting people from lead and copper contamination. WORKING TO REDUCE LEAD EXPOSURE IN OUR WATER SYSTEM

City of Fort Smith Water Utilities is focused on protecting the health of every household in our community. People living in homes with a lead or galvanized pipe previously connected to a lead service line have an increased risk of exposure to lead from their drinking water. You may receive notification that your private service line (PSL) is made from lead, galvanized material that is or was downstream of a lead service line, or unknown material. (A private service line is the portion of the water line between the structure and the water meter.)

  • If you receive a notice and know or can determine the material of your private service line, you may self-report and Water Utilities will update its records.
  • If you receive a notice and do not know the material of your private service line, you may request help by filling out a PSL Verification Approval form. Water Utilities will then schedule a crew to excavate your private service line to determine the material. Please Note: due to the high number of unknown service lines within our service area, expect some delay before your private service line excavation is scheduled.

Please self-report or make your request before December 31, 2024.
You may also contact us at LCR@FortSmithAR.gov or (479) 308-2172.
Water sample kits for Lead & Copper analysis are available upon request.
